I would like to know why this sentence is correct:
    1.5 million dollars WAS spent....
    and why not
    1.5 million dollars WERE spent.

Thank you for your help and time.

    Re: why?

    Hello Lubica from Slovakia

In answer to your question, the phrase 1.5 million dollars is a sum, a singular entity, which is why it calls for a singular verb. Consider also:

    • 400 dollars is a lot of money.
    • $400 dollars is a lot of money.

    • 400 dollars are a lot of money.
    • $400 dollars are a lot of money.
