    Unhappy Two queries

    I have two queries:

Is the following sentence in a computer manual correct or not?

Enter the account number, and then click the Submit button.

My colleague argues that the comma is not required.

Also, can the first letter after a colon be capitalised?

    Account: This is the ...

Please answer from a UK English perspective.

    Re: Two queries

    Hello dreamwarrior

Ex: Enter the account number, and then click the Submit button.

Use a comma + a little conjunction (and, but, for, nor, yet, or, so) to connect two independent clauses, as in "He hit the ball well, but he ran toward third base."

Contending that the coordinating conjunction is adequate separation, some writers will leave out the comma in a sentence with short, balanced independent clauses (such as we see in the example just given). If there is ever any doubt, however, use the comma, as it is always correct in this situation.

Ex: Account: This is the ...

There is some disagreement among writing reference manuals about when you should capitalize an independent clause following a colon. Most of the manuals advise that when you have more than one sentence in your explanation or when your sentence(s) is a formal quotation, a capital is a good idea.
