    Please help me select the correct choice.

    What shape is it?

    It is star./ It is a star.


    Which one is correct? Thanks a lot.

    Neither of them is very good, "It is star shaped" would be better.

    Thank you. That was what I thought. I was quite puzzled when a little boy called me today asking this question. I said I was not sure, for I had never said or seen that. But I advised him to take 'it is rectangular' as a reference and select 'it is star'. However, I was still a little uncertain and that is why I posted this thread.

    Unfortunately, you picked the wrong comparison!

    A native speaker would never say, "It is star". It would always be, "It is a star".

    Having said that, I agree the most common response would be, "It is star-shaped".

    You can tell the little boy it is stellate if you want the cognate word for rectangular.
