    A thought is: a notion, idea, memory, ... concepts of any kind, all mental activity shy of emotion.

    What does "shy of" mean here?

    all mental activity shy of emotion. - Not including emotion - mental activity that does not include emotion

    Yes, here it is the opposite of beyond, a word we lack: Fr. en deša.
