    think on their feet

    Hi

They suddenly had to “think on their feet,” to react to each
new situation on its own terms – and the ego developed as a way of enabling them to do this.

--- Does it mean they had to think spontaneously and suit themselves to every new situation as it came (on its own terms)?

It means that they had to think while acting, not to take the luxury of thinking first and then acting.
Literally, they didn't have time to sit down and think about it.

Yes, it means that. It means, also, that they had to think, plan, and resolve problems while they were working, doing their jobs, or functioning in whatever way they did. They couldn't stop to think about something and then return to work. They had to think while working - on their feet - in action.
