    ashen / ashen roots/ ash-tree/wormwood/mugwood

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am on the right track with my interpretation of the words “ashen” and "ash" in the following sentences?

In a rare personal appearance at a bombing site, Prime Minister Maliki arrived at the provincial council building about an hour after the explosion, his face ashen as he surveyed the carnage.

ashen (adj.) = white, pallid, wan, dough-faced, whey-faced, pale as a ghost

The effects of the ashen shower were not instantaneous.

    ashen (adj.) = ash-colored, pasty

By ashen roots the violets blow.

    ashen roots = wormwood = mug-wood
violet = any of various low-growing herbs of the genus Viola, having short-spurred, irregular flowers that are characteristically purplish-blue but sometimes yellow or white

    Avoid the ash,
    It draws the flash.

ash = ash-tree = any tree of the genus Fraxinus, in the olive family

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

More likely to refer to a shower of ashes

By ashen roots the violets blow.

ashen roots = wormwood = mug-wood The roots of an ash tree - certainly neither wormwood nor mugwort.

Just lifting Thesaurus entries is not the best way to approach these.
