can i get some criticial feed back please

Please look at the student mistakes below and do the following:
The people was very kind. (Pre-intermediate)

    1. Identify what is wrong with the sentence
    2. Write what probably caused the mistake
    3. Identify what type of a mistake it is
    4. Write how you would correct it.

    My Answer:
Subject-Verb Agreement, The verb of a sentence must agree with the subject in number and in person.
Instead of: The people was very kind.
Consider: The people were very kind.
Instead of: The people was very kind.
Consider: The people are very kind.

The student used incorrect use of Grammar

Can anyone help add some critical points to this as I feel it need an extra eye.

(Note: These are all spoken mistakes. The level of the learner is written next to the sentence).

You're right so far but you need to address question number 2. What is it about this sentence in particular that might have led the student into making this error. (Clue- the answer may well lie with the noun)

I am no expert, still I will give it a try...

Please look at the student mistakes below and do the following:
    • The people was very kind. (Pre-intermediate)

    1. Identify what is wrong with the sentence
    2. Write what probably caused the mistake
    3. Identify what type of a mistake it is
    4. Write how you would correct it.

Ans. 1. The subject in the sentence is "person" which is plural and the verb used "was" is singular, thus they dont agree in number.

Ans. 2. The student is not aware of subject and verb agreement rules. Or the student considered "people" to be a singular noun as "person".

Ans 3. This is a subject and verb agreement error (Singular Subject takes a Singular Verb).

Ans. 4. Student would be made aware of the rules of subject and verb agreement. Student will also be told about the difference between people and person.

    • Instead of: The people was very kind.
    • Consider: The people were very kind.
    • Instead of: The people was very kind.
    • Consider: The people are very kind.

    • Instead of: The people (Noun Plural) was (Verb Singular) very kind.
    • Consider: The person (Noun Singular) was (Verb Singular) very kind.

Yes, I agree with Mr Tdol and Anupumh.
The student were mistaken because they used to use the are or were when the subject end with "s".

You might also need to point out that we use the present simple for general statements.
