    Wasn't that the door bell?

    Sandra:
    - Wasn't that the door bell?
    Sue:
    - No, it was the parrot.
    Sandra:
    -----
    Sue:
    - I know. It copies the sound so perfectly that
even the dog is deceived and races to the door!

    A) You must be joking!
    B) Are you sure? It sounded just like the doorbell to me.
    C) Well! Well! How long has this been going on for?
    D) How do you know: Do you ever answer the door?
    E) Was it really? Well how does your dog react?

    What do you think?

    I think B.

Funny, I prefer A, since it's now a question of the dog's hearing. But I agree B looks good too.

Yes, A could fit too, in fact a case could also be made for C. But I prefer B.

Given that A, B, and C are possible and indeed good answers, the question is very poorly designed, as a language examination tool. ;)

Yes, that often seems to be the case in volcano's posts.

B is the only answer that non-native speakers could be expected to understand readily, so that should be the answer.

But I agree that A and C are possible in colloquial English, as others have said. You'd have to understand the pragmatic uses of "I know".
Even in B, "I know" is used to mean "I agree" - not its primary meaning.

Having re-read it, I think I was thrown off by the order in which they are written, and now I agree B is far better than the others.

Yes very true "I know" is quite often used a verbal nod by non native speakers...
Indians can be found using "I know" and "very well" for "I agree"...
