    object/subject confusion!

Can anybody help me with this sentence?

Everybody wanted Carol to be the captain of the team.

I was reading an article on infinitives and it said that carol is the actor/subject of the sentence above. However, to me, it seems like she is the object of the sentence.

For example, if we change the sentence structure to:

"Everybody wanted the captain of the team to be Carol"

It feels to me as if Carol is at no time the subject/actor in this sentence.

Can someone tell me where I am going wrong?

You're not wrong. The subject of the sentence is "everybody," and the [transitive] verb is "wanted."

Indeed, you are not: 'Carol' is the agent of the infinitive, but not the subject of the sentence!
