    oculist, ophtalmologist, eye doctor

Hi, I 'd like to know if
    oculist
    eye doctor
    ophtalmologist

are just synonims. If not, what is the difference?
I read in my dictionary that oculist is an old word and not much used today. Is it right?
    Thanks Rip.

    Re: oculist, ophtalmologist, eye doctor

    ophthamologist - eye doctor
    optometrist - not-quite-an-eye-doctor; prescribes spectacles
optician - makes glasses from optometrist's prescription
oculist - ophthamologist or optometrist; yes, an older word

Googling 'oculist' turns up a first page of definitions, where googling 'optometrist' and 'ophthamologist' turns up first pages of firms/associations.

    Not quite.
    opthamologist - physician (MD)
optometrist -- doctor = holder of an advanced degree but not a medical degree.

Both are eye doctors. One is a graduate of a medical school, and the other a graduate of (what else?) an optometry school. Optometrists prescribe corrective lenses. Opthamologists deal with diseases of the eye (macular degeneration, glaucoma, etc.) and can perform eye surgery.

Opticians (LO) and optical store professionals can dispense eyeglasses, make adjustments to eyeglasses and they can measure your pupillary distance. Optometrists (OD) can do the same as opticians, but they can also do eye exams and write a prescription. Ophthalmologists (MD) can do the same as optometrists, but they can also do eye surgery.
I find it on website. firmoo.com
