to refer or not to refer

    Dear teachers,
Could you check whether such sonstruction is correct in English?

In the first sentence she discusses Johnís idea, while in the second - Maryís.

I'm especially worried about this dash, such practice is common in Polish, but I'm afraid it can be inappropriate in English. Could you please give me some hints how to make it sound proper English?
    I'll be really obliged.
    Thank you in advance.

I would write it like this:
In the first sentence she discusses Johnís idea, and in the second, Maryís.

Thank you, as I have noticed, commas are more frequent in English than dashes, am I right?
