    Understatement is a statement that is less than complete:

    -Remember Babe Ruth? He was a good player.
    -Well, that's an understatement - he was an awesome player, he was one of a kind. In fact he is a legend!

    In this converstaion, the first person is not giving his statement enough emphasis and falls short of describing Babe Ruth adequately.

    Understatement can be ironic in nature as well:

    So how was John's first day as a janitor? Did he manage to sweep one hallway in eight hours?
    I don't know, he's been fired only seven times before. Let's ask him when he gets home.
