    The addition after a quote

    Hello,
I am not sure and therefore I want to ask you.
    Which is right?
"We have no time" John said.
"We have no time" said John.
    - sounds better but could mislead...

    Thank you!

P.S. The addition after a quote or The addition behind a quote ?

    Cheers!

Re: The addition after a quote

    Hi Nightmare,
The American style would be to have a comma after the last word in the quote. You are free to say either word order though.

"We have no time," said John.
"We have no time," John said. -- Edited to fix my missing quotation mark. Sorry about that.

(Why do you think it could mislead?)

(Oh, and "after" the quote sounds much more natural to me.)

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

Re: The addition after a quote

    Hello Barb_D,
    Thanks.
Okay, that means both are correct...

I thought it could mislead because in English we use first subject and then predicate.
The other way round would be the same as in German which is often a typical grammar mistake by Germans.

    Thanks again!

    Cheers!
