Post the second most biggest city?

    Dear teachers,

Please help me with this question.

Suppose that 'A' and 'B' are city names.
A is the biggest city in the world. B is No.2. Do we say "A is the first most biggest city in the world", "B is the second most biggest city in the world"?

    Thanks!

Re: the second most biggest city?

No, you don't need to say "most biggest." If it's the biggest, it's simply the biggest. No additional qualifiers are requires.

It's the largest city in the world.
It's the second-largest city in the world.

Post Re: the second most biggest city?

    Dear Barb_D,

"What is the second most germiest job?"
This is what I heard from an English teacher on a daily English-teaching radio program. The program that day was talking about 'germy jobs', and one study shows that a teacher's phone, keyboard, kid's desktops harbor many germs ...
Is there something wrong with the above sentence?

Re: the second most biggest city?

I'm not sure that "germy" is a word, let alone "germiest" -- but I can certainly understand what they mean.

Use "second-most" before adjectives that are not ... oh, shoot. I forgot the word. Not the adjectives that are the absolute.

The second-most beautiful girl in the world. (We don't have the word "beautifulest." Or if we do, it sure sound silly.)

The third-most popular vacation spot. (We don't have the word "popularest."

The second most talented singer in her grade. (No "talentedest.")
I'm actually seeing a mix of using the hyphens or not.

Compare that to second loveliest girl, third highest mount mountain, second happiest memory, etc.

Re: the second most biggest city?

    Dear Barb_D,

If 'germy' is an adjective, meaning 'a lot of germs', and we have a new word 'germiest', we should say 'the second germiest job?

I guess we should! (Not a job I'd want to have. What about you?)
