    Question Linking words THANK YOU

    Hello everyone,

I want to ask you for help!

I have an exercise on linking words and I have a few problems.

1.I overslept this morning. ..........., my car ran out of petrol on the way to work.
    a)not only that
    - this should be correct, but I think both are ok.
b)furthermore - the only thing that comes to my mind is, that it might be too formal

2.The report is expected to be critical of the industry. ......, it is likely to recommend extensive changes to production.
    a)what's more
    - this should be correct, why not b as well?
    b)furthermore

3...... the wonderful main meal we also had a delicious pudding.
    a)in addition to

b)besides - this one correct, why not a as well?

4.It was a brilliant game. ........, we didn't have to pay to get in!
    a)What's more
    b)In addition

5.We waited ages for a bus. ...... we decided to walk home.
    a)eventually
    - correct, why not both?
    b)at last

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

    Re: Linking words THANK YOU

    Hello Kuki,

With #1 and #2, you are right when you suggest that formality might be significant. #1 is an informal context; #2, formal.

#3 is not a well-formed question. However, I think the question-setter wants you to compare and consider the meanings of "also" and "in addition to".

With #5, I would accept both answers; but "eventually" is possibly more expressive of weariness, in such contexts. (Or perhaps its polysyllabic nature permits the expression of greater weariness.)

What do you think about #4?

    Best wishes,

    MrP

    Hello,

About number 4, I think In addition to is very formal in such a sentence.
There is no difference between at last and eventually, (finally)?

    THANK YOU!

That's number 5. No doubt Mr P asked you about number 4. because you haven't given an opinion about that.

I also prefer 'eventually' for 5.
We usually use 'at last' for something we have no control over.
At last a bus arrived! At last he gave me an answer.
However, you could have walked home any time, so 'at last' sounds wrong.
    For 4, I would choose "What's more ..."
