    Question An urgent need...please

    Hi there,
Is there any idiom/phrasal verb (British English) for the behaviour/action people have when whatever they do is because they feel they shouldn’t be or aren’t less important than others. For example they do their best to follow their education cos a relative has done so...or they buy a luxurious car just because a friend has just bought one. Such people are always comparing themselves with others to see how to keep up with them. (even at school or college some students are so.) Any name, Adj, or idiom would be great...Thanks a lot...(btw, they always have such negatively competitive views...)

I think this might mean the same: "to keep up with the Joneses" ...Does it? Can I use this in academic writing?

You could 'maintain appearances' if you're worried about 'keeping up', though it's not an rule that we mustn't use phrasal verbs in academic writing- but we do use fewer. Also you can use inverted commas around a phrase that is essential but not appropriate for the style of writing- but do it sparingly.

Thanks. Could I use these items in academic writing too? The topic is Post graduation, and I'm sure you realise why the idiom fits well into the context! Thanks again.
