    stretch

I need help with both grammar and vocabulary. How can I express the following in a correct and good way?

"In front of the house there used to be a big garden that stretched up to the water of the mile wide river Tatar on the bank of which the house was situated."
(The house was on the bank of a wide river. The garden extended to the slope of the riverbank up to the point where the ground touched the water. The slope was part of the garden.)

The house was on the bank of the mile-wide river Tatar, with a large front garden that sloped gently down to the water-line.
