    there is , are , a an one

    A:Is there a student in the class? B : ???????
    if there are 3 students in the class I think we should use the answer"yes there are 3 students" but if want to give a short answer should we use yes there is or yes there are ? which one?

    2nd question : there is a girl in the garden. what does it mean ? for instance when somebody says "there is one girl in the garden " I understand that there is 1 girl. not 0,2,3,4,5,....
    what should I understand if he says there is a girl.
    only 1 or it is possible to be 1,2,3,4,... I have asked this because in the graammar books generally there is a dialogue like the below one ;
    A: is there a pencil in your bag ? B: yes there is
    A: how many pencils are there? b : there are 5 pencils.

    1. Is there a student there? Yes, there are (two students there).

    We don't often ask in the singular. We favour this: "Are there any students there?"

    Or, if not specific, then the singular: "Is anyone there?"

    thats correct. if we dont know, we generally ask it in plural.in that case there comes another question ; A: are there any students in the class? B : ......??

    if it is 0 = no there arent.
    if it is 2,3,4,5,6... = yes there are some/alotof/afew....
    if it is 1 = ? what should we say in this case?
    which one of the below you prefer , or do you have another answer?

    1) person B: says "yes there are." and only if person A : asks again "how many students are there?" Mr.B: answers "there is one student."
    2 ) person B directly says yes,there is one student.
