    Trashed?

What does the word "trashed" really mean? When I looked it up in the dictionary, it means someone who is drunk. However, I have also heard the word used this way: "They left the place completely trashed--bottles, cans, and garbage, littered everywhere."

    Which is correct?

    Thanks.

    Hi there,
Sorry, my first language is not English...but, don't you think the word "Trashed" refers to the place? I mean, "They left the place in an awful way by leaving trash such as bottles...etc."...."a trashed place", I'd say.

"They left the place completely trashed--bottles, cans, and garbage, littered everywhere." Here "trashed" means the place was seriously damaged. The emphasis is not on bottles and cans littered around. It is possible for bottles and cans and garbage to be present without the place itself being damaged.

    Which is correct?

    Thanks.

    Re: Trashed?

Thank you for the link, 2006. That really helped clarify the meaning. By the same token, what would be an accurate adjective to describe a place in which bottles, cans, garbage, etc. are littered about but the place remains undamaged?

    Thanks :)
