    Question Looking for a word...

    Hi everybody,

Im actually looking for the noun/verb we use in the following situation: You're buying Sth or you've already done so, or you've received a service but you realise that there's no money on you, and the situation is so tough you have to LEAVE Sth (Sth of high value) so that you'll later get back and pay for what you've taken. What are that item (left to the seller) and the verb used in this case, please? (in BrE) Is "tip" used in BrE to mean the same thing? Many thanks.

    Re: Looking for a word...

It's is a 'pledge', but the usual expression is 'to leave (something) as collateral'. When you pay the money and the object used as collateral is returned to you, you have 'redeemed' the object.

redeem: regain possession of (something) in exchange for payment
