Cool air was so hot that it blistered his cheek howled over him

After a blast, this sentence follows affecting one character

Air was so hot that it blistered his cheek howled over him

I'm not sure about what does howled over him mean here?

May the sentence be saying: Air howled over him and was so hot that it blistered his cheek?

    Any idea very appreciated

    Thank You

I suspect there might have been a typographical error and the sentence should have been..............

Air that was so hot that it blistered his cheek howled over him.
