The use of this study in academic writing

One of my friends got a strange comment from thesis examiners regarding the use of this study. The examiners, if I understood correctly, concern that using this study as a subject sounds wrong and inappropriate!
For example: this study investigates the issue of X.

    So, what do you think?
Is it better to get red of this study? if so, what is your suggestion?

    Thanks:)

I see no problem with "this study investigates...."

It's fine, as long as it's a research paper. If it's an MA thesis with no new research, it is probably silly to use "study" for an andragogical exercise.

It could be ambiguous if you are discussing another study, which of course you are going to do in your paper.
Study X (Smith, 2007) shows that A=B. This study establishes that ...
    Which study? Smith's or yours?

if ur talkin about only one and specific study then use "the study" if that doesn't express enough meaning then use the study of sth i make wat u mean in this study clearer
