    what does this sentence mean

    I've come across this sentence in a reading. And it really doesn't make any sense to me. Could you explain what it means, please?

    Americans who have made English friends comment that, even years later, "you can take up just where you left off".

    it means their friendship was made to last long, even after many years, they're still friends.

    take up where left off
    to continue something that was started by someone or something.
