    solace/penny-pinching/putting a cunch/budget-conscious travelers/balk

    Dear teachers,

    Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

    solace = comfort in grief; alleviation of grief or anxiety; also, that which relieves in distress; that which cheers or consoles; relief.

    We have to give solace to a friend.

    The found solace in music.

    She didn’t solace herself with illusions.

    As a rule he did solace himself with drink.

    solace = console

    In business of mirth and of solace.

    TV’s Kathleen Walter, one which he hopes will be a solace to all those who have lost or who will lose loved ones along the way.

    The proper solaces of age are not music and compliments, but wisdom and devotion.

    solace = rest, relaxation; ease

    conscious = perceiving, apprehending, or noticing with a degree of controlled thought or observation;
    budget-conscious travelers = travelers, taking into consideration their finacial possibilities

    balk = to check or thwart by or as if by an obstacle; pause or hold back in uncertainty or unwillingness

    putting the crunch- this doesn't sound natural to me- people feel the pinch/crunch

    In my humble opinion “crunch” has many different connotations.
