    left a legacy

    The content says...

John Paul Getty was the son of a well-off oil businessman, but as his autobiography reveals he parlayed these merely good circumstances into a massive empire that left an important philanthropic legacy.

Can anyone explain me the red text in simpler English?

    Thanks!!!

    Re: left a legacy

As Getty was a professional do-gooder, the word 'philanthropist' gives it a greater dimension, and in his case he did spend hundreds of millions in various areas. The legacy just mean it continued after his death, an inheritance, like his great collection of antique books and rare texts.

    Re: left a legacy

    wow! very clear now.

I know he is a philanthropist but just don't understand what message the author would like to convey.

    Thanks again!
