You can tell that to Marines

I would be grateful if someone told me the meaning of the following highlighted phrase:

"He tried to pump me. Were she and her cousin friendly? No doubt they worked at the clinic to be together? You can tell that to Marines, I thought, but I kept my mouth shut."

    Thanks.

Contrary to what the questioner believed, they did not work at the clinic to be together. Or so the referent of I thought.

You can tell that to the marines comes from the idea that marines travel a lot and so have been around. They have seen many things and have a lot of life experience. You can't deceive them easily.

We were told that the saying originated because the marines were neither soldier nor sailor, and would believe ANYTHING said to them - "Tell that to the marines. They will believe anything!.
