    as

    YEAR-END JACKPOT BECKONS
The booth is very popular, as it sold three tickets that hit the jackpot last year.

This as is a conjunction which is used to state the reason for something, isn't it?

    Examples:
    - As you were out, I left a message.
    - She may need some help as she’s new.

The subordinate clause after the conjunction as provides the reason for what is explained in the main clause.
