    Hi

The following patterns will help you:

go to + place / event
    go + action (gerund)

So, the following sentences would all be correct:

    I went swimming. (ACTION)
I went to the swimming pool. (PLACE)
I went to the swim meeting. (EVENT)

In BrE: I went to the swimming meeting.

Interesting... I'm originally from the UK but have spent so many years in North America, that it's sometimes hard for me to remember what is British usage and what is North American usage. When writing that example I thought of "swimming meeting" first but it sounded less natural for me than "swim meeting"... I guess this is a warning sign!

They are swim meets, not meetings, in the US as well.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

So I guess I'm not fully bilingual yet. Thanks for the clarification.
