Unhappy East or west, home ist best.

    Hi,
does anyone know if the sentence "East or west, home ist best." exist in english? I have considered "ist" to be some old/book/locals expression or the whole sentence should be a phrase. Maybe "ist" could be stands for "is the".

It's the same as "Home sweet home. There's no place like home."
"ist" is the abbreviation for " is the" in spoken Engilsh.

    "East, West, Home is best".

I have never met the version you have given. If there is an abbreviation, it would be written "Home is t'best" but the metre does not bear it.
