    survival of the disease/victim

The use of immunotherapy in cancer sees anti-bodies in the immune system stimulated to identify and destroy tumours.

Sophie, aged two, is taking part in an international clinical trial funded by Cancer Research UK and follows promising results from a US study that found using immunotherapy improved the chances of survival of the disease.

The technique has been used in adults before but not children, and around 40 patients will be recruited to take part in the trials over the next 12 months.

What does the part in bold mean? Why 'survival of the disease" instead of 'survival of the victim'?

    Thanks in advance.

I would reword it "....of surviving the disease."
