    what does it mean?

What's the meaning of "to stand tall"?

I'd like to know the generic meaning and the meaning that it has in this particular sentence too. '' I stand tall to get by".

Thanks very much for your explanation.

    Re: what does it mean?

stand tall - Idioms - by the Free Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

I think you should first check the idioms or phrasal verbs and if you still can't figure out what the sentence means only then it would be more appropriate to ask it on the forum.By this way we can make the forum more efficient.

As for your question, I guess you should give us its context. Are there any sentences precede or succeed this one?

    Here is what I meant to say;

If I can't understand an idiom, phrasal verb, usage of a certain word,etc... The first thing I do is not directly logging in the forum and asking a teacher. I check some sites (whose links are in my browser as favourites) and only then, if I can't find the answer, as a last resort ,I use the forum.(including some cases that can't be found on the web). By this way, the teachers don't have to answer the questions that can be solved by a few simple searches. And they make use of this saved time to answer the questions that need to be answered by a native speaker or a native speaker teacher .This is how the forum would be more efficient.(my opinion, of course)

    Re: what does it mean?

I took this sentence from a song that I heard some days ago and since I couldn't get the real meaning of "stand tall", I decided to write in this forum to ask for an explanation by a teacher or a native. That's all...I have to say that I have already looked it up in the dictionary but I don't think that the meaning "to be proud" or "to feel proud" is the meaning of this phrase in this context...

The piece of the song I'm reffering to is the following onw where you can find the expression I didn't understand.

    Lately I'm sorry I can't hold a smile
But I stand tall to get by
No matter how hard I try to hide
Did you know I take the time for you
Did you know that I would see you through
Did you know that I would play the part
I must've made it clear right from the start

    Re: what does it mean?

He stands tall pretending to be proud, pretending he is not hurt, so he can get through the day without people giving him pity.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
