I guess it's uniquely American slang (based on your responses) for "this puppy" to mean "this thing/machine."
How do you turn off this machine?
As you view the photocopies spitting out 200 copies of the thing that needed only one copy: Help! How do you turn this puppy off?
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
