    marbled auditorium

Whatever the reason, it was a different kind of Barack Obama who addressed an array of stony-faced Scandinavians in the marbled auditorium of Oslo's city hall last week. Most of his speech would have prompted little comment if it had been uttered by George W. Bush.
Barack Obama warlike? No, he's just an American president - Telegraph

Why did the journalist use 'marbled' to modify the auditorium? Did he subtly stress the 'stony-faced' local people there?

    Thanks!

    Re: marbled auditorium

Can it simply be that the auditorium is made from, or at least decorated with, marble?
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
