How to describe someone doesn't make any effort to study?

How do you describe someone doesn't make any effort to study?
Are there common phrases (not as long as "doesn't make any effort to study ") or adjectives (such as the antonym of studious which is commonly used by the public) to use?

He's not very diligent. He's not very studious.
I can't think of a good single word just at the moment. If the context is known, you can use "lazy".

"unscholarly" is what I have in mind, but it fails to convey the idea of lack of effort. I find "studious" rather uncommon. "Lazy" unmistakeably would be my first pick.
