    "US" or "U.S."
Data released this month by the Centers for Disease Control shows that average U.S life expectancy at birth has reached an all-time high of 77.9 years.

    Isn't "US" or "U.S." correct?

    Re: "US" or "U.S."

It's just a typographical error. It should be U.S.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
