a shelf that runs the length of one wall
Does it mean "the shelf reaches the top of the wall" or "the shelf is as wide as one wall"?
    Thanks a lot.

    (Not a teacher)

As wide as one wall. One that goes vertically, reaching the top and bottom of the wall would 'run the height of one wall'.
