    what is the meaning of almost as?
    here is an example:the landowners were almost as powerful
    my dictionary has no entry about it.

    The landowners were not as powerful as someone (someone = an entity not mentioned in your sentence), but they were close to it.

    To repeat, you are close to being as adjective (big, tall, strong, deep, wide, pretty, rich, happy, etc.) as the person/thing you are being compared to.

    He is almost as tall as his brother, despite being 3 years younger.
    When you told me you were getting married, I think I was almost as happy as you were!
    Some nights, the full moon seems almost as bright as the sun.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
