please help me out with this sentence

"These school mothers certainly had the polished looks that expensive hairdressing and designer labels afforded even the plainest of them; but they also had something extra, something he felt French women had lost along the road to elegance."

Have no idea what it's talking about; can anyone tell me what it means?
    Many many thanks~

    Hi. there
I think I have a good idea of the meaning of this elaborate sentence.
These mothers wore expensive designers clothes and had their hair styled by expensive hairdressers. The fact that they paid so much attention to their looks showed even though they tried to keep it simple- the had a polished look -there was something about their looks- something elegant, classy- that showed the attention they paid to it.
    Hope I have been heplful.

(NOT a teacher) An English saying: Clothes make the man (woman). If you dress well, you respect yourself more and so do other people. Some of these ladies were plain looking (neither beautiful nor ugly). Nobody paid them attention when they dressed in everyday attire. Then they got fancy hairdos and bought expensive clothing. Now they LOOK as if they were accustomed to dressing this way every day. "Polished" = very elegant and refined.
