    "a" necessary in this case?

    There's a bumper-to-bumper traffic.
    In this sentence, is the article 'a' necessary or should be said "There's bumper-to-bumper traffic." without it?

    The problem is, indeed, "traffic" is an uncount abstract noun, which should not have been modified by any determiner if a general sense is meant. However, if you want to denote a particular instance of it, like in your example bumper-to-bumper (traffic), an indefinite article is normally used.
