    analyse sentences

    consider the following example:
    1)I put down the pen
2)She always put down her boyfriend , but he didn't seem to mind.

In my opinion, both of the word "put down "are phrasal verb because the particle can move back to the object, it becomes :I put the pen down.

    is my thinking right?

Put it down. 'down' can't be a preposition, but an adverb particle. Prepositions are followed by their complement and not the other way around. 'put down' is a separable optional phrasal verb. It means these:

    - When the object of the phrasal verb is not a pronoun, either 'put x down' or 'put down x' works.
    - When the object of the phrasal verb is a pronoun, it comes between the verb and its particle (put it down).

    Re: analyse sentences

    what is the meaning of:
'Prepositions are followed by their complement and not the other way around'?

I only know that preposition must be followed a noun phrase to be a prepositional object in a sentence.
    Thank for reply
