    People vs persons

    Hi there,
I almost made a mistake to use people instead of persons. Does everybody know when can I use people instead of person (Plural). Thank you.

Why do you think it's a mistake?
As far as I know, people and persons have the same meaning.

    Okay, I'm not a teacher...

    Cheers!

Hello I am not a teacher,

but I really reckon there is no difference between these two words, maybe 'person' sounds more French and 'people' more English.

    Have a nice day.

    Re: People vs persons

Most of the time the words are interchangeable.

There are many people in the world.
There are many people at the party.

People, I think is used more as a group, whereas persons is more individual.

There are two persons/people who are suspects in the current murder investigation.

There are many people/persons who hold a responsible position in the company.

If a photographer is taking a photo of a group, he/she could say, "Would the "people" in the second row please stand a little more together."
Or, "would the person at the end of the second row, please step forward"

    I am not a teacher.

    Example:

There are two people in the room.
There are two persons in the room.

"people" is an uncountable noun, whereas "person" is a countable one.

    Not really.
"People" is countable. "People" is the plural of "person". We can count people:
    • There is one person here.
    • There are three people here.
    Countable Nouns

    Cheers!

I don't agree with your link which says that "people" is the plural of "person", it is often used that way but the plural of "person" is "persons".

(NOT a teacher) In the "old days," "good" writers tried to follow this rule: use "persons" for a specific number, such as "There were 15 persons at the meeting": use "people" for an indefinite number, such as "Many people attended the concert." But now it is almost 2010. The new "rule" (which most American newspapers follow) is: use "people" as the plural for "person." So most Americans would probably say, "There were 15 people at the meeting." Yet, if you say "15 persons," that is also equally "good" English.
