From《THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION》：
I tell you, son, this thing really came along and knocked my wind out.
what do "came along " and "knock my wind out "mean?
knocked someone's wind out literally means:temporarily stopping him from being able to breathe by delivering a sharp blow to the diaphragm(a sensitive part of the body). This is one of the quickest and most effective ways of ending a fight.
However, metaphorically as here knocked my wind out, (it is not a physical blow but) I felt the impact of a blow to my body (belly; stomach; abdomen)that made me uncomfortable, after reading the massage/letter/email.
