    holding up the show

    《THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION》:
Dufresne? Get your ass out here, boy! You're holding up the show! Don't make me come down there now! I'll thump your skull for you! Dufresne, dammit, you're putting me behind! I got a schedule to keep. You better be sick or dead in there, I shit you not!

1.What's the usage of "hold up" here?
2.what does "put me behind" mean?

    thanks a lot!

holding up the show = Creating obstruction in the way of organising the show/performance
putting me behind = trying to deny certain facilities/position/privilege

    Interesting answers so far.
I don't quite remember the scene from the movie, but "holding up the show" means preventing the smooth running of whatever's happening by being slow or lazy. It generally has nothing to do with shows or performances (although it could).
    I haven't heard of Anglika's definition. Maybe it's British.

"Putting me behind" means "causing me to be late".
