The first - 'the collection of garbage' - most likely refers to the same as the second - the act of collecting garbage. However, if you came across someone who indeed liked to collect garbage as a hobby, this is the sentence you would choose to refer to his garbage collection. Or, if you had a particularly unhygienic neighbour who rarely emptied his bins you could say 'the collection of garbage in that man's house is ridiculous.'

The use of 'garbage collecting' also has a 'ring' to it about collecting rubbish as a hobbie. This is merely through similarity with other forms of collecting e.g. stamps. It has nothing to do with the syntax and the more likely meaning is that it's collecting garbage.

It didn't occur to me that anyone would collect garbage as a hobby. (Yuck!)

hi to both of you dear friends
and thanks for your answers , well i want to contemplate more about these forms .
Linguest says the form of collection and collecting have different meaning . i think this is true . what is your idea riend Ronbee? forgetting about the specific question garbage collecting , i wanna ask whether " collection " and "collecting" are different or no?
and what about other verbs ? is it the same in other verbs , too?
    thanks in advance

Collection and collecting are largely the same. In the case that was cited, it would be more natural to refer to the activity of "garbage collection" than "the collection of garbage." "Garbage collection" is a common expression for someone who is "collecting garbage." But this is a subtle point. People would accept all of these as interchangeable.

i think the form of verb + ing that makes noun is different with the noun form of a verb means
    inventing is different with invention
    what is your idea?
and which verbs are like this?

Inventing is certainly different from invention. (The one is a verb and the other is a noun.) Do you want to make inventing into a noun?

Lightbulb Re: changing the position of articles

for sure they are different in meaning but be careful any verb followed by ing is a noun . so my question is that which verbs have different meanings with these forms
