    make it up

I would like to know the meaning of *make it up* in the following sentence:

The fact that nobody else was doing it dindn't mean anything. It just meant we had *to make it up* as we went along.

The speaker is a tennis player and the subject is *hitting a forehand with two hands*.

    Thanks in advance.

It means that they had to invent/create that form of play.
