***NOT A TEACHER*** Perhaps it is preferable to say, "He was truant to my class." Although "play truant" is in the dictionary, I think that many (most?) Americans are not comfortable with that phrase. In the States, however, there are many slang expressions for being absent from class without permission: (1) He played hooky from my class (2) She cut/skipped/ditched my class.

    (Not a teacher)

    Play truant
is the term I know (British English).

As for the slang terms! Well, if I even go to the next town, they will have their own term for playing truant! Some examples of words that mean 'play truant' around where I live:

    Skidge
    Dogging it
    Bunk
    Wag it

My guess is there are dozens and dozens of terms used to describe this one act! I guess the more an act needs to be hidden from people (teachers, parents), the more words there are for it!
