    Smile difficult sentence

    dear in this sentence but now the school year was over, and he was back with the Dursleys for the summer, back to being treated like a dog that had rolled in some- thing smelly. what is the meaning of rolled and why they use had rolled thank you

    ***NOT A TEACHER***(1)The dog had rolled in something = maybe the dog had rolled on his back in something smelly. (2) "had rolled" is past perfect. In "regular" English, the simple past would be OK, but the past perfect gives a better idea of time.
