The comma is used when you have a brief pause in a sentence or to separate words in a list. "If you work hard, good things will happen." In this sentence "If you work hard" is only a dependent clause and therefore requires only a comma.

The semicolon (;) is used when you come to a full stop. When you have two independent clauses you need either a semicolon or a period. "I see that you have been working hard; I'm sure that good things will happen to you."

Hope this is not too late!

There are a lot of rules for commas, but there's only a few rules to remember about semi-colons.

    SEMI-COLONS

The best way to understand the semi-colon (;) is to think of it GRAMMATICALLY like a period (.)--the two parts of the sentence before and after the semi-colon MUST be complete sentences (*1 exception below).

The only thing that makes a semi-colon different from a period is that you (the writer) are giving one extra piece of IMPLIED INFORMATION: the ideas/information in the two parts of the sentence are closely connected (ex: cause & effect), that you want to reader to know it is important to know just how close of a relationship they have.

Often the 2nd part of the sentence gives MORE DETAILED INFORMATION about the 1st part.

    Examples:

"Global warming is a worldwide problem; only the combined efforts of all countries will fix it."

"Once you open the gate, the lion can escape; this has been the cause of two deaths this year at the zoo.

*EXCEPTION: You can use a semi-colon as a comma ONLY when you have dependent clauses (separated by commas) in a list--in this situation, all the commas that separate the different things in the list BECOME SEMI-COLONS.

    Example:

"You can only use the following: a pencil; a piece of paper, supplied by your teacher; a highlighter pen; and the textbook."

    Hope this helps!

    Chris
