    What does "Pitch black" mean?

Hi, I am wondering about the meaning of "Pitch Black", it is an australian movie with Vin Diesel among others http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0134847/ . In my country it is translated as something like "Very-very black darkness" or "Very-very deep darkness".

What is your English translation of "Pitch Black"? Is it some kind of slang in Australia or in the United States?

    Thanks in advance.

Usually, "pitch black" means very dark.

Also: black as night, black as sin, black as coal, coal-black, jet-black....

FYI: pitch in the meaning of 'tar'; jet in the meaning of 'semi-precious stone'
