    unless/can't

    Hi

"Unless you can't find a parking place somewhere else, you can park next to my house".

I know that "unless" is a negative in itself, but I think "unless you can't" is OK?

In this case, the correct sentence would be:

Unless you CAN find a parking space somewhere else, you can park next to my house.

    OR

IF you CAN'T find a parking space somewhere else, you can park next to my house.

    Re: unless/can't

I see. I thought that "unless" and "can't" would be correct?

    Thanks

It is correct, but it means the opposite of what you want it to; and it would be uncommon:
Unless you can't smoke here, why don't we light up?
Unless you can't = If you can.
"Why don't we go out tonight? ... I mean, unless you can't for some reason".
